The Best Pineapple Smoothie Recipe

Pineapple is rich in Vitamin C, manganese, and bromelain-- an enzyme with protolytic qualities that aid in the breakdown of protein (which is good for digestion!)

Pineapple is famous for an enzyme called bromelain, which is most often cited when people joke about how pineapple juice can be used to soften leather or tenderize meat. Bromelain has protolytic qualities that aid in the breakdown of protein– this is partly what makes pineapple a “superfood”, as it is also loaded with Vitamin C and manganese.

For centuries, people in Central and South America have used pineapple to treat indigestion and quell inflammation, but modern estheticians also use pineapple to make astringent facial treatments (it helps smooth and detoxify the skin).

Our favorite way to use pineapple, however, is in a tropical summer smoothie. The sweetness and richness of its flavor pairs nicely with other tropical fruits like mango and banana, and makes it so that you don’t have to add sugar to your smoothie (but who does that, anyway?) Check out one of our favorite pineapple smoothie recipes that came to us in a Green Blender delivery a few weeks ago. If you grow sage or blackberries at home, this is the perfect way to use them.

Ingredients

  • 1 oz blackberries
  • 2 oz pineapple
  • 1 apple, chopped
  • 3 sprigs sage
  • 1/2 tsp maqui berry powder
  • 2 tbsp walnuts
  • 1 cup water + 1 cup ice

Method

Blend the ingredients until smooth and enjoy! For a frothier take on this super-summery drink, try freezing the pineapple ahead of time. You won’t regret the decision.
